Chapter 3 She Can’t Be More Pitiful Than This
The hospital was rather quiet at night. Even when dressed in his dark-colored pajamas, Kingsley still emitted an unapproachable aura wherever he went. Followed by both his younger brothers in such weird clothing, they caused quite a stir at the hospital.
Chanel had only superficial scratches on her body, but she had no place to go. She could only watch her grandfather’s ICU ward from the corridor far away. She didn’t know that he was so seriously ill.
Chanel waited outside the glass door of the ICU unit and started pacing around like a fool. The next day, she planned to go home and make some delicious food for her grandfather and wait until he woke up.
Kingsley went up to the nurse station and placed his hands on the desk, asking, “May I know which room is Mr. Bourdain in?”
When the two nurses on duty caught sight of Kingsley, they were so enamored by his looks that they got too excited and couldn’t speak properly.
Duncan and Sean were too used to this. They knew that Kingsley was handsome. Girls often threw themselves down at his feet to worship him.
Kingsley suddenly stopped a few steps away from Yves Bourdain’s ward. The two brothers behind him also stopped in their tracks.
Chanel was leaning heavily against the glass door of her grandfather’s ward. Her weak, slender body and facial expression were all half-covered by her long, jet-black hair. Chanel’s sorrow could be felt throughout the corridor. She looked small in the huge space. It made everyone feel sorry for her.
“Is it that bad? Why is she looking so pitiful?” Sean couldn’t stop himself from muttering out loud.
Duncan said calmly, “She does look very miserable.”
Kingsley’s expressionless eyes rested on the forlorn figure up ahead. His eyes still looked as cold as ice. He then walked silently toward Chanel.
“Chanel, are you alright?”
Sean spoke up first, shocking Chanel, who wasn’t expecting anyone behind her.
Chanel turned around and saw the three Axton brothers standing in front of her. She was dumbfounded.
“We’re sorry, Chanel. We’re here to bring you home. How are your injuries? Are they very serious?”
Duncan came over and looked at the treated bruises and scrapes on Chanel’s body. He was rather relieved. Then, he reached for Chanel’s suitcase. Chanel saw him and quickly snatched her suitcase away from him. “I can go home by myself,” she said.
Chanel felt some grievance in her heart, but she said nothing. She had never left her grandfather’s side before. However, her grandfather was in the ICU now, and they didn’t allow anyone else to spend the night at these wards.
There were no other people left in the corridor. Kingsley remained quiet whilst Sean and Duncan kept trying to coax Chanel to leave. Chanel refused them altogether. About an hour later, the two younger siblings finally looked to their eldest brother for help.
Kingsley’s threatening gaze swept over Chanel’s scared expression. His deep voice was laced with impatience. “You have two choices. One, to come with us on your own. Two, I will personally bring you back with us. Choose wisely.”
Chanel stared at Kingsley with a dumbfounded look on her face. Her heartbeat kept increasing. She didn’t want to go back. She didn’t want to feel unwelcome and hated by them again.
Chanel kept retreating. Her back was literally pressed against the door handle by now. She felt a slight sense of relief. “No, I’m not going anywhere.”
Kingsley immediately came closer to Chanel and said in a murderous voice, “Say that to my face again.”
The two younger siblings gave each other a look. They were done for. Their eldest brother had chosen violence.
Chanel trembled as she grabbed onto the door handle even tighter. Her eyes turned red. “N-No, I…”
Chanel hadn’t even managed to finish her sentence when Kingsley reached behind her back and yanked her hand away from the door handle.
With such close proximity, anyone passing by would actually think that they were having an intimate moment together.
Chanel’s face was barely touching Kingsley’s chest. Her heart nearly leaped out of her chest. Kingsley could also smell the shampoo in her hair. He bent down and lifted her up suddenly.
The corridor was filled with a girl’s scream. Kingsley had picked her up like she was nothing and carried her on his shoulder.
Sean saw many people coming out to the corridor to watch. They smiled awkwardly at the people and said, “It’s nothing. Please go back.”
Duncan went to get Chanel’s suitcase and brought it along with him. “Chanel, stop screaming. You’re disturbing the patients.”
The more Chanel screamed and struggled. The further Kingsley draped her over his shoulder. Chanel was so terrified that she started to cry. “Put me down, Kingsley. I’m going to fall!”
“Don’t worry. Even if you managed to put on 200 pounds overnight, he could still carry you with ease,” Duncan said softly to Chanel as he pressed the button for the elevator.
Chanel grabbed Kingsley’s pajama shirt and wouldn’t let go. She was simply too scared. “I want my grandpa. I don’t want to go back with you all!”
“Don’t make such a fuss, Chanel. If you fall on your face, your grandfather isn’t going to be able to recognize you,” Sean said as he stepped into the elevator with the others. As long as Kingsley was around, nothing was impossible.
Just like that, Kingsley carried the crying and struggling Chanel out of the hospital under everyone’s curious and watchful eyes. He brought her to the black Maybach and finally set her down.
Chanel had been draped over his shoulder upside-down for too long that she lost her balance as soon as she was set on her feet. She crashed forward into Kingsley’s arms and subconsciously wrapped her arms around him.
Kingsley’s hand froze mid-air after he’d just managed to unlock the car door.
“Chanel, are you trying to take advantage of him?” Sean said, getting worried for her when he saw the frostiness in Kingsley’s eyes. Kingsley had never allowed any woman to touch him.
“Kingsley, just let her get used to her surroundings for a bit. This is just a normal reflex,” Duncan said calmly as he stood not too far away.
“Let go.” The low voice was laced with warning intent, and it came from above Chanel’s head. She shut her eyes tightly and couldn’t care less. “No, I’m too dizzy.”
Kingsley’s eyes flashed for a moment. He roughly pushed Chanel aside and got into the front passenger seat.
Sean climbed into the back seat of the car.
Chanel had been thrown off in her dizzy state. She still hadn’t managed to find her bearings yet.
“Duncan, sit at the back.” Sean opened the car door a little too forcefully and accidentally bumped it against the dizzy Chanel. She fell to the ground in a heap.
Sean looked at Chanel, who was lying on the ground in an extremely awkward manner. “Sorry, it was an accident.”
